13. HUNGARIAN GYPSY DANCE

Music: By Johannes Brahms.

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Premiere: Season of 1922-23.

Cast: Tamara K. Leshevich, Rostislav Slavianinov.

Note: Balanchine thought this work was first performed at Pavlovsk; he was quite sure the premiere was not on the formal stage of the State Theater of Opera and Ballet (formerly Maryinsky). Mikhailov gives 1922-23 as the premiere date. The Principal Dancers of the Russian State Ballet performed the work in 1924 during the summer German tour and the October performances at the Empire Theatre in London, where it was danced by Tamara Geva both with Balanchine and with Nicholas Efimov.
