Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Scenery and costumes by André Derain.

Premiere: June 10, 1933, Les Ballets 1933, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris. Conductor: Maurice Abravanel.

Cast: The Genii, Serge Ismailoff, Ludovic Matlinsky; The Matrons, 6 women; Two Persian Saltateurs, Lucienne Kylberg, Tamara Sidorenko; Two Buffoons, Ismailoff, Matlinsky; The Courtesan, Tamara Tchinarova; The Young Girl, Tamara Toumanova; The Lupercalian Priest, Roman Jasinsky.

Note: The scene is a Latin feast in Etruscan Italy; two genii attend pagan rites performed by matrons, buffoons, acrobats. The Young Girl encounters a priest of Lupercal; wearing a three-faced mask, he dances for her a parable of youth, maturity, and old age. A final scene of orgy ends in ridicule with the entrance of the donkey of Silenus.
