22. PAS DE DEUX

Music: By Fritz Kreisler (Liebesleid from Alt Wiener Tanzweisen, 1911).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Premiere: July 31, 1923, evening with dancers from the academic theaters, Petrograd.

Cast: Lydia Ivanova, Nicholas Efimov.

Note: Newspapers do not specify the location of this concert or whether a special event was involved. All the dancers were participants in the Young Ballet, and were also members of the State Theater (former Maryinsky) company. Balanchine is known to have choreographed two works for the concert: this duet to music of Kreisler and a polka by Rachmaninoff for Ivanova [23]. He later thought he probably also choreographed a duet to Tchaikovsky's Romance without Words (Op. 40, no. 6) for Ivanova and Efimov, and may have created a dance for Efimov to Dulov's Variation Classique, presented the same evening.
