Ballet-Burlesque for Singers and Dancers


Music: Music and libretto by Igor Stravinsky (Le Renard, 1915-16, commissioned by Princesse Edmond de Polignac). Derived from a tale by Alexander Afanasiev. English version by Harvey Officer.

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Scenery and costumes by Esteban Francés. Scenery painted by Centre Studios under the supervision of Gilbert Hancox, built by Martin Turner; costumes executed by Karinska. Lighting by Jean Rosenthal.

Premiere: January 13, 1947, Ballet Society, Hunter College Playhouse, New York. Conductor: Leon Barzin. Singers: William Hess, William Upshaw (tenors); William Gephart, Leon Lishner (baritones).

Cast: The Fox, Todd Bolender; The Rooster, Lew Christensen; The Cat, Fred Danieli; The Ram, John Taras.

Note: Le Renard was first choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1922, and rechoreographed for that company by Serge Lifar in 1929. Balanchine's version was first presented on the second Ballet Society program, which also included the premiere of Divertimento.
