Classic Ballet in One Act


Music: By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Symphonie Concertante in E-flat for violin, viola, and orchestra, K. 364, 1779).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Scenery and costumes by James Stewart Morcom. Costumes executed by Edith Lutyens. Lighting by Jean Rosenthal.

Premiere: November 12, 1947, Ballet Society, City Center of Music and Drama, New York. Conductor: Leon Barzin. Violinist: Hugo Fiorato. Violist: Karl Braunstein. (First performed by students of the School of American Ballet, with Todd Bolender as guest artist, November 5, 1945, at Carnegie Hall, New York.)

Cast: ALLEGRO MAESTOSO: Tanaquil Le Clercq, Maria Tallchief, 22 women; ANDANTE: Le Clercq, Tallchief, Todd Bolender, 6 women; PRESTO: Le Clercq, Tallchief, Bolender, 22 women.

Note: Created for students before its professional premiere to show the relationship between a classical symphony and classical dance. Originally presented (with Élégie [245] and Circus Polka [230]) on the program of the National Orchestral Society entitled Adventure in Ballet. The scenery for the Ballet Society production was a literal transcription of a design by the Baroque artist Giuseppe Galli Bibiena.
