334. MONUMENTUM PRO GESUALDO

Music: By Igor Stravinsky (three madrigals by Gesualdo, recomposed for instruments, 1960).

Choreography: By George Balanchine.

Production: Scenery and lighting by David Hays (1960); lighting by Ronald Bates (1974).

Premiere: November 16, 1960, New York City Ballet, City Center of Music and Drama, New York. Conductor: Robert Irving.

Note: Stravinsky made orchestral versions of Gesualdo's madrigals to honor the four-hundredth anniversary of the composer's birth. The ballet is in three parts, each lasting just over two minutes. Occasionally since 1965, and almost consistently since 1966, performed with Movements for Piano and Orchestra [344] with the same leading female dancer in both.
