Ballet in Two Acts


Music: By Ludwig van Beethoven (Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus, produced 1801, commissioned by Salvatore Viganò)

Choreography: By George Balanchine (uncredited) and Serge Lifar.

Production: Scenery and costumes by Quelvée. Scenery executed by Mouveau.

Premiere: December 30, 1929, Paris Opéra Ballet, Théâtre National de l'Opéra, Paris. Conductor: J. E. Szyfer.

Cast: Olga Spessivtseva, Serge Lifar; Mlles Lorcia, Lamballe, Cérès, M. Peretti; 5 demi-soloists, 13 women, 9 men.

Note: Jacques Rouché, director of the Paris Opéra, engaged Balanchine to choreograph the ballet. Balanchine conceived the basic outline and created some of the dances, then became ill; Lifar completed the ballet and received credit on the printed program.
