Among the collections are the papers of Nelson A. Rockefeller, who was a lifelong friend of Lincoln Kirstein. Rockefeller's aid to Balanchine's work ranges from the American Ballet Caravan tour of South America in 1941 to the construction of New York State Theater in the early 1960s.

A piquant moment in the collaborative careers of George Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky was the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus commission to create The Ballet of the Elephants. The Theatre Museum was absorbed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in January 2007. Archive research visits are by appointment well in advance. The collections relating to Balanchine include photographs and programs, costumes for his early ballet Le Chant Du Rossignol, C. B. Cochran press books that document his work for London revues, Anton Dolin scrapbooks and photographs, and the Cyril Beaumont Collection.
