George Balanchine choreographed numerous works for stage and screen of great significance. His body of work, which encompassed musical revues, operettas, Broadway shows and Hollywood films were part of shows that were enormously popular and reflected and directed American tastes in entertainment for almost twenty years.

Most of George Balanchine's contributions to the treasury of popular culture were created in the late 1930s and in the 1940s. "An Evening with Balanchine Broadway and Hollywood" will be a tribute to George Balanchine's contributions to both the theater and film during this period. The evening's performance will feature a cabaret review of songs from the productions that Balanchine contributed to, highlighting shows such as: "Louisiana Purchase" (Irving Berlin); "The Boys From Syracuse" (Rodgers & Hart); "On Your Toes" (Rodgers & Hart); "I Married An Angel" (Rodgers & Hart); "Star Spangled Rhythm;" "Goldwyn Follies" (Vernon Duke), and "Where's Charley?" (Frank Loesser).

Peter Cincotti, 19-year-old jazz pianist and cabaret singer, will perform songs from many of the shows that Balanchine worked on. Mr. Cincotti will also accompany New York City Ballet dancers who will sing and dance to some of the popular songs from these shows.

Amy Burton, a lyric soprano with New York City Opera is known for her electric stage presence, musical intelligence and crystalline sound. Also known for her performances on Broadway, she will perform some of the songs from the productions Balanchine contributed to.

George Steel, the evening's musical director, is from Columbia University's Miller Theater. Mr. Steel has composed a Œmusical suite' expressly for the evening which highlights much of the Popular Balanchine repertory. Tom Gold, soloist with New York City Ballet, will choreograph to Mr. Steel's suite using dancers from the company.
