In December 1923 The Carousel, an ‘intellectual cabaret,’ opened in Petrograd. For this occasion and subsequently, Balanchine devised movement for poems set to music. The Soviet periodical Teatr reported Balanchine’s collaboration with the directors Evreinov, Petrov, Tversky, and Miklashevsky, the artists Akimov and Nicolas Benois, and also with Olga Mungalova, Armfeld, and Volkov.
