Note
The premiere was part of a special Salute to Italy, which also included the premiere of Monumentum pro Gesualdo [334], and performances of La Sonnambula [232] and Lew Christensen’s Con Amore. Possibly influenced by the ballets of Bournonville (Balanchine spent several months in Copenhagen in 1930-31 and in 1956). The male role was created for Jacques d’Amboise, who was unable to dance the premiere.
