Note
A salute to France in music and dance: With Stars and Stripes [318] and Union Jack [401], the work completes a trio of ballets projected as an ‘Entente Cordiale.’ Balanchine chose Auric to compose the score for the occasion; they had first collaborated under Diaghilev in 1926 on La Pastorale [62], and again in 1932 on La Concurrence [130].
